The Honey Trap - Irish Rep

This piece by Leo McGann centers on blame and forgiveness.  I do feel that the play is bifurcated; the first act is an interview of Dave, a British Army NCO.  Here Dave recounts a honey trap, or a trap that took his friend’s life.  The second act shows Dave conspiring to find Sonia, one of the two IRA women who set up the honey trap on Bobby.  During the interview, it is as if McGann is asking us to consider if we can be really neutral about our memories.  It isn’t until the second act that McGann focuses on the forgiveness theme and pays it off.  I found Daniel Marconi’s  (Young Dave) and Harrison Tipping’s  (Bobby) work to be engaging in showing the multifaceted relationship between the two men.  McGann’s female character, Sonia (Samantha Mathis) has depth.  Michael Gottlieb’s lighting and Charlie Corcoran’s scenic design is effective in showing the murkiness of memory through the opacity/translucence of the walls.  The unchanging walls supported the ‘trap’ theme; yet for the coffee shop, I felt they were less effective.  All in all, McGann’s study of a British soldier’s coming to terms with tragedy during his service in the Troubles is engaging.  #irishRep #honeyTrap

Coverage: Archduke – Roundabout

Archduke centers on toxic masculinity, using the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand as its vehicle.  For me, this theme was not fully clear during the first act.  In Act I, it seemed that Josep
